Sophie Miller

The Sophie Miller Foundation, a supporting organization of The Episcopal Home Communities, is dedicated to subsidizing charitable care for older adults and funding innovative programs that elevate the quality of life for future generations of seniors.

The Foundation honors the legacy of Sophie Miller, an extraordinary woman whose compassion inspired the creation of a special home for the elderly poor in 1923 and established the tradition of benevolent care that remains at the heart of The Episcopal Home Communities.

A mission continues

In 2010 The Episcopal Home Communities launched the Sophie Miller Foundation to direct the fundraising and manage the donations that are essential to the continued care of elderly adults. Funds raised by the Foundation are used to subsidize housing and support services for residents of all faiths, who are in need of financial support at the three retirement communities owned and operated by The Episcopal Home Communities.

Recognizing the changing expectations for life after 70, the Foundation also is committed to providing funding for pioneering initiatives and programs that benefit seniors both within and outside the walls of our campuses. How you can help.

The need endures

The Sophie Miller Foundation honors the commitment of an extraordinary woman who was galvanized by the plight of the elderly poor and whose passion inspired the creation of a special home to care for them. The Foundation will continue her legacy of fund raising to provide charitable housing and support services for those who cannot afford to pay the full cost of their care at the three Episcopal Home communities in Southern California.

About Sophie Miller

Sophie Miller embraced the cause that would define her life, while doing missionary work in the neighborhoods of Los Angeles in the early 1900s. Struck by the condition of the elderly people she encountered, many of whom were unable to support themselves in their old age, she vowed to provide a comfortable and secure place for them to live. With great tenacity, persuasive appeals and an unwavering conviction, her lifelong dream was finally realized when The Home for the Aged opened in 1923 in Alhambra, predecessor of The Episcopal Home Communities' Scripps Kensington campus.

About The Episcopal Home Communities

Providing charitable care is a distinguishing hallmark of The Episcopal Home Communities. In addition to providing highly distinctive retirement living choices to retirees who are able to pay the full cost of their residency, the organization has always made it a priority to welcome those who are in need. Since its founding, The Episcopal Home Communities has provided tens of millions of dollars in subsidized care to elderly residents who lack the necessary income and resources, thanks to the wonderful generosity of residents, their families, and friends and benefactors throughout the community. Since 2000, the charitable care has topped $15 million. Visit The Episcopal Home Communities website.
