Where People in Need Find People Who Care
Honoring a great humanitarian by continuing her mission.
It began with ten cents. A hundred years ago, Deaconess Sophie Miller saw the plight of the poor in Los Angeles, especially in their most vulnerable older years. She had a vision: to provide housing, security and fellowship for older people in an environment where they could thrive. She began by distributing dime cards, collecting funds, coin by coin, to fulfill her dream.
Deaconess Miller’s tireless advocacy helped create the first Episcopal Home in Alhambra in 1923, an organization that has evolved into Episcopal Communities & Services (ECS). Today, serving older adults of all backgrounds and beliefs, ECS provides guidance, senior living options and community outreach—all in support of Sophie Miller’s mission. The Sophie Miller Foundation, a supporting organization of ECS, raises funds for benevolent care and community outreach programs. A great legacy lives and breathes, thanks to the generosity of people who share our core values.
